Cultivation Jam Second Week

This is my development log for the second week of the Cultivation Jam 2022 10-27June.

*** Day 8-16 ***

I used my second week of the jam in a similar way to the first week. I took everything as it came and tried to let the game tell me how it should evolve. Bit by bit it grew into what it looks like now.

I added seeds to the game, so they can be grown into saplings. I also started working on a more advanced menu system / toolbar. Before I had been using numbers 0-9 to pick a tool, but the amount of tools were getting to many so I needed something better. Spent quite some time porting my old system into a more advanced menu system with sub menus of different tool types. I also integrated it with the shown active tool at the bottom of the screen. It took me about three days to make the transition, but then I did not work much during this time. I made the menu work both using keyboard or only mouse.

After this I decided to work some on the main menu, and try to add some settings and credits pages.

I got a basic menu working and found a Font I liked. I did include a Survival option for the menu, but I removed it later and I don't think the submission will include that option. I also made a popup message thingy that shows information to the player when cutting down something or trying to do inputs that are not valid. I added some deterioration of soil patches so they go through different stages and becomes grass if left alone for to long. I also created some clay that generates randomly.  And I fixed a more dynamic skybox to set the mood. I did create a day and night cycle but I'm not sure if it is doing more harm than good atm. I did make days alot longer than nights to counter this.

I Added a Shop Menu so Player can buy and sell stuff for gold. This needs some rework to set the prices correctly. At the moment selling stuff only gives back half the value.

I added a workbench item along with a creation panel. I also made it so player need to hold Shift using the axe to destroy them, if not the menu opens instead.

I spend some time making the horizon spread out further, some seemless transition from gamearea and the "outside". I added some houses in the distance but not sure it looks ok or not.

I tried to make a logo for the game. Had some trouble making it look good, not sure if I will make another or keep this as is.

I also spent alot of time making adjustments on the tool-tip to limit the frustration the game might give the player. Also corrected alot of minor bugs. Stuff like hindering player from interacting with objects while menus are open. I also changed so items that are being created has a timer, and player gets popup info of time remaining if trying to interact with it.

Tomorrow is my last day for the Jam, and I really need to focus on the most important stuff so I get a playable game. At the moment alot of features work as intended, but there isn't really a game to play. Have to fix that tomorrow...
